Unfortunately were not entirely happy with our stay.. A day or so prior to coming to Cascade Cottage, Roger (the host) phoned me and mentioned that he needs some work undertaken at Cascade Cottage and his larger cottage further down the road, the Mountain House, on the 2nd day of our visit (Monday). He informed me he was losing electricity from sRead moreomewhere and wanted it investigated and also wanted extra solar power batteries fitted to make his properties more economical. So for this reason he offered us his larger property, the mountain house, as a gesture (as this was taking place and disturbing us on our paid time at the cottage) for the remainder of the week after the current holiday makers who were staying there had vacated and the property had been cleaned, which he informed me would be approximately 3pm Monday afternoon. This wasn't a great start but I accepted it with the upgrade and was chuffed to tell my girlfriend as we were away on this break for her birthday. The first night we arrived at Cascade Cottage at approx. 5pm after travelling for over 10 hours. From 7pm until approximately 1am the following morning there was no power due to a power cut so we weren't able to do much at all - this was due to a fuse that needed replacing at the local sub station which is apparently a recent regular occurrence - to which I was understanding - however it was the first night and a Sunday - so by this point there was no local take away open to get dinner, no oven or means of cooking food, no hot tub, no heating, and nothing for us to do on a cold evening after we'd travelled all day to get there. Again, not a great start, but we accepted it for what it was and just had an early night. The next day (Monday), the host Roger arrived at Cascade Cottage at 10am with his contractor to undertake the work at the property. It turns out that there was no leak and that a cleaner had left a power switch on somewhere which was using electric while the property was empty. As mentioned, Roger had prior offered us to stay in his bigger cottage, the Mountain House, further down the road for the duration of our stay, to which he showed us around on the Monday afternoon around 2pm. For this reason we hadn't unpacked our belongings at the Cascade Cottage, nor had we been able to do much nor feel settled. We didn't have use of the hot tub on the first night nor during the day on the second day as we were waiting for the thumbs up to go to the the Mountain House and the one at Cascade wasn't ready for use due to this. We also didn't use the fire on the evening we arrived out of politeness as we assumed we'd not be in the Cascade Cottage for the remainder of the week. Once he had left, we started hauling our belongings down to the larger cottage, however Roger then called 30 minutes later and informed us that actually we could only stay at the Mountains House for half of our stay and that we'd need to return to Cascades Cottage from there on because he hadn't been well and he'd forgotten he had another booking there - which I understood, however this was due to be our compensation and he could not follow through with what he had promised. So after all of this, we had Sunday wasted with no power or use of anything, Monday was wasted time waiting around for the host and his contractor to complete and the previous holiday makers to vacate the Mountains House and for it to be cleaned so we could move our stuff down to the Mountain House and then Thursday evening we had to move it all back to Cascade Cottage again, which is a reasonable task as you can't park near the larger property. This was supposed to be a relaxing break after a very stressful few months however it turned in to be the opposite at times. I did reach out yesterday (the day after we returned) to the host, Roger, after he messaged me at the end of our stay (saying he hopes we had a good stay and asking for feedback) and I explained our issues and our experience and asked if there's a way he can compensate or even offer discount on a future stay (if we could guarantee a peaceful stay) but I am still awaiting his response, if I am to get one at all. So overall - not happy with having saved a long time to take my girlfriend somewhere special for her birthday to only experience so much wasted time, limited use of the services I paid for, lack of fulfilment of compensation and at this point in time also, lack of responsibility or reply from the owner, Roger, to rectify this and enter discussion on compensation. A holiday or short break away is supposed to be relaxing, time to shut off and enjoy some freedom from the normal everyday chaos, and I don't feel we got to experience that much on this trip. I will update this once I hear from the host, Roger, and hopefully we can come to an agreement and a satisfied result - if I do hear anything at all. Hide
