This delightful former schoolhouse, now a beautifully restored cottage, is perfect for a family or friends who want their pets to share a wonderful holiday. Sleeping six guests, along with two pets, the timber-built period property is less than 200 metres from a sandy beach in the pretty fishing village of Sandsend. You can reach picture-postcard Whitby (3 miles) along lovely beach and clifftop walks, while the glorious North York Moors National Park (3 miles) offers a wealth of scenic trails to discover together with your pups.

This super property is flooded with light from large windows. Brimming with character and charm, it features a splendid, open-plan living space with a vaulted ceiling and wood-panelled walls. Comfortable leather seating before a wood burner defines the spacious lounge area, and there’s a sleek kitchen/diner. The ground floor also houses a family bathroom and two bedrooms – a super-king-size with sumptuous extra seating, and a pretty twin room in marine blue. Upstairs is an impressive king-size bedroom tucked into the eaves with an en-suite bathroom and seating area. Outside, enjoy al fresco dining around a picnic table to the front of the house, with more seating and a BBQ to the rear.

Sandsend has a dog-friendly pub, family-run cafe, and shop, plus a seafood restaurant with takeaway fish and chips—perfect for beach suppers. Part of the beach is a dog-free zone in the summer season, but pups can race across the sand all year round in the signposted section. Explore Whitby’s dramatic ruined Abbey with its 199 steps, book a boat trip from the quaint harbour, or board the heritage steam train (dogs are welcome) to Pickering for a magical ride through the North Yorks National Park.

We (6 family members celebrating my birthday) had a wonderful stay in the Old Schoolhouse which is spacious but cozy offering everything you need but with an old world charm The location is amazing, idyllic and quiet and only 2 mins walk to the beach. Owners live next door in the hotel who were super friendly and helpful. And a special mention abouRead moret the welcome pack that they left, including eggs, milk wine amongst other things. As above. The property is in a poor state and overall very grubby and in part dirty. there have been roof and wall leaks, parts of the internal exposed roof structure are very dirty and the toilet seat was broken, dirty and dangerous in the upstairs bathroom when we moved in, this was replaced in the same afternoon but obviously had not been checkeRead mored. The kitchen was in a poor state of repair, the equipment barely adequate, and the units, sinks etc not at all good. The fridge was tiny and nowhere adequate for a six person dwelling. Overall, the physical aspects of the property had suffered 'bodged' repairs over many years and it needs a great deal spent on it to bring it up to scratch. Hide

The Schoolhouse is a unique and wonderful holiday cottage in an absolutely gorgeous location. The owners were so welcoming and left a very generous welcome pack. No negatives for us, just a gorgeous holiday and a great experience overall. We could not have asked for a better holiday and absolutely loved it - as did our two dogs.

Superb quirky cottage in idyllic surroundings. The hosts were most welcoming when we arrived and throughout the holiday. Basket of goodies was hugely appreciated, thank you.

A lovely setting and very helpful owners who live in the attached hotel. The house is past its best needing some updating. The top bedroom was impossible for us to use as the steps in and out of the bedroom and bathroom were not described adequately. Very high steps in and out. A very odd set up. Lovely location, the property would be challenging for anyone with mobility issues or small children using the upstairs bedroom and bathroom, as the stairs are very steep and there are awkward steps in the bedroom. Also outside there are steps front and back. The garden is raised at the back and difficult to climb. The cottage is light and airRead morey with comfortable furnishings. Great location tucked away in a quiet corner of Sandsend yet close enough to walk down to the sea. Plenty of space for us and ideal for dogs given the woods and access to the beach at low tide. Very easy access to Whitby and the wide North Yorkshire area.
