Set in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, the historic village of Lavenham is a wonderful destination for guests and their four-legged companions. This characterful 17th-century, Grade II-listed former grain barn sits peacefully beside a gentle stream and is an excellent base for couples or solo travellers accompanied by a loyal hound.
Inside, the ground floor is surprisingly roomy, with a cosy lounge where you can sip your morning coffee while watching the water flow by or relax on plush sofa seating with a film on the Smart TV. The kitchen is well equipped for home-cooked meals, and the dining area is positioned to take in views across the stream and surrounding fields. Upstairs, you’ll find a king-size bedroom with an en-suite shower room, along with a separate bathroom. A desk on the landing provides a handy spot for catching up on work if needed. Do note that, due to the property’s age, there is limited head height of up to 6 feet on the first floor. While the cottage doesn’t have its own garden, it’s well placed for exploring with your furry friend thanks to a network of nearby footpaths and trails.
Widely regarded as one of England’s best-preserved medieval settlements, Lavenham boasts over 300 listed buildings, with crooked timber-framed cottages and pastel-coloured facades lining its winding lanes. These lead to a charming market square where you’ll find a greengrocer, a vintage tearoom, a dog-friendly pub and the striking Lavenham Guildhall, cared for by the National Trust. A 12-mile drive away, Bury St Edmunds brings a vibrant mix of independent shops, eateries, the beautiful Abbey Gardens and an impressive cathedral. Closer still, the historic wool town of Long Melford (5 miles) is home to Melford Hall, where tail-waggers on the lead can join you roaming the parkland.
