At the heart of the bustling seaside resort of West Bay, this characterful holiday cottage makes a fantastic getaway for families and friends looking for a charming coastal retreat. Offering spacious accommodation for up to six human and two canine guests, the stone-built property dates back to the 18th century and has been beautifully updated and tastefully decorated throughout. With a pretty garden, a lovely sunroom, feature fireplace and exposed stonework, this stylishly furnished Grade II-listed former counting house is perfect for discovering a breathtaking part of the glorious Dorset coastline.

The cottage features a cosy lounge with comfortable seating and a wood burner set in an impressive stone fireplace. With flagstone flooring, stone walls and a wealth of equipment, the fresh, welcoming kitchen/diner is a perfect spot to gather to enjoy a hearty feast. Sliding doors lead through to the light-filled sunroom offering a lovely space to sit back and plan tomorrow’s adventures. Heading upstairs you will find an invigorating family bathroom and four bright and spacious bedrooms: a sweet double, a cheerful children’s bunk bedroom and two pretty king-size rooms, one with a relaxing en-suite bathroom. From the sunroom, a couple of shallow steps lead to the enclosed pebbled garden. With a table and chairs, this is a lovely space for dining alfresco with your canine friends basking in the sunshine. There’s also a handy garage with a football table.

The beach, dog-friendly from October to April, is just 350 metres away, and West Bay has a choice of pet-welcoming places to eat and drink. There are plenty of all-year pet-friendly beaches nearby including Hive Beach, Cogden, Eypemouth and St Gabriel’s Mouth, all within 6 miles. Dogs are welcome to help you explore Coney’s Castle, Lambert’s Castle and the gardens at Forde Abbey, all within 15 miles.

We had a wonderful weeks stay at 'The Counting House'. It was really spacious and we loved the original features. The location is fantastic, with West Bay's beaches, the harbour and many places to eat, drink and explore right on the doorstep. We would love to return!

The counting house is in a perfect central West Bay location - its a short walk to any of the amenities. With that convenience comes a parking challenge although the space outside the garage door provides effective space for one car. The house is very large downstairs and all the bedrooms are decent size. Beds were ok but lacked support making sRead moreleep that little bit harder on warm nights. It can be a little noisy at night as traffic passes by and seagulls make their noises. The kitchen is well equipped, double oven plus grill and hob and separate microwave. Decent dining space inside. Lounge is also a decent size. Outside, we liked the garden dry/beach style. There is a large dining table with chairs but no parasol which was unhelpful as the garden is a sun trap and is regularly dropped-on by the legions of seagulls who hang out on most roofs. We would also have appreciated a barbecue to help with alfresco living when the sun shone. Hide

We asked if we could change the start and end dates for our trip to enable our family to join us for longer and you kindly contacted the owner, who arranged for the property to be cleaned in time for our holiday to start a day early, we are very grateful as this meant we spent slightly longer together as a family. Also the heating wasnt fully workiRead moreng but just one call from us and the housekeeper came out, then a plumber was on site within 2 hours and successfully remedied the problem- we couldnt have asked for better treatment! The location of The Counting House makes for a very relaxing stay in West Bay. Whether crabbing or boating, shopping or going to the beach or cycling , its all easy. Highly recommend restaurant in the railway carriage and a blast on a rib We visited Charmouth and Lyme Regis- both very busy. Good range of stores in Bridport.
