For a holiday in the great outdoors with an equal ratio of humans to pups, book a stay at this converted 17th-century farmhouse on the edge of the Lake District National Park, with its amazing views over the Whicham Valley. Accommodating up to four people and four canines, this property, which also has an enclosed furnished outside space, would suit one or two dog-loving couples or a small family.
With many original features such as oak beams, Lakeland slate floors and exposed brick walls, this characterful accommodation has a cosy rustic feel to it. Dog treats are provided for wet-nosed guests on arrival. The place is steeped in history and was once owned by the cousin of William Wordsworth – though we reckon it’s the toasty wood burner that the pets will be more interested in! In the evenings, you can have an indulgent soak in the standalone bath while you lap up views across the fells.
You’ll have access to wonderful walking trails from right on your doorstep, whether you wish to visit the nearby Millom Rock Park, a geological site, or wander into Millom 4 miles away. Silecroft Beach, just over 1 mile away, has no dog restrictions, so is the ideal spot for four-legged members of your party to run with wild abandon over the sand and shingle. The Duddon Mosses (8.5 miles) are a wonderful base for exploring the fauna and flora of the Duddon estuary and dogs on leads are welcome. When the pets need to run free, take them up Black Combe summit (2 miles) or head to Coniston Water, a 5-mile-long lake you can walk around.
