A rural retreat for two plus their furry friend, this gorgeous house has bags of character and lots of space for a couple, with a sumptuous king-size bed, a large open-plan living space with a wood burner you and Fido will love, and French doors out to the garden. It’s in the middle of stunning Sussex countryside surrounded by footpaths and lovely walks, 1.5 miles from the town of Mayfield.
This single-storey old stable building has been beautifully converted with guests’ comfort in mind. It has underfloor heating throughout and lots of space to sit and chill. Make yourselves at home on the sofa in front of the TV while Fido snoozes in front of the wood burner. When you’re feeling peckish, whip up a feast for three and take a seat at either the breakfast bar or the foldaway dining table and chairs. And when it’s time for bed, the king-size bedroom will prove hard to resist. Outside, there’s a pretty garden with a chiminea and a BBQ, storage space for your bikes, private parking, and great views. They’ve really thought of everything!
Grab the lead and head out on walks straight from the door with public footpaths passing through the grounds. Hawksden Park Wood is nearby with walking and cycling trails to explore or combine your walk with a pub lunch at one of the two pubs in Mayfield, both of which welcome furry family members. Walkers and cyclists will find routes at Bewl Water and Bedgebury Forest (11.5 miles), where you can also have a go at various water sports, including paddleboarding, canoeing, sailing, and windsurfing. History buffs will want to visit Battle, named after the battle of Hastings, with its ruined Abbey and the Herstmonceux Castle – your furry friend is free to accompany you outside at both places (15.5 miles). Literature lovers will enjoy a trip to Bateman’s, an impressive 17th-century house and Rudyard Kipling’s home for more than 30 years.
