Opt for the perfect couple’s retreat, not forgetting your best furry buddy, with this one-bed cute cottage, part of a small complex on a smallholding. As the name suggests, it’s converted from the old blacksmith’s cottage and retains some former rustic features like the big arched window and ceiling beams. Enjoy open-plan living space indoors and a shared patio outside. But the real draw of this part of Northumberland is the great outdoors and with Hadrian’s Wall within 0.5 miles, walkies pose no problem. The market town of Haltwhistle is within 1 mile for supplies and prime holiday mooching.
The cosy lounge/kitchen/diner is great for relaxing after a hard day’s walking. Under beamed ceilings, the well-equipped kitchen sits at the back with a table for two to the side and the comfortable lounge area takes advantage of the large feature window. Sleeping quarters comprise an elegant double bedroom that’s spacious and relaxing, with a modern shower room on the same floor. Outside, there’s a shared patio complete with a BBQ and furniture for dining alfresco or spotting wildlife, and stargazing by night – aided by this area’s dark skies.
This location is excellent for walkers (and woofers!), with plenty of trails through scenic hills and valleys. Cawfield Quarry (1.5 miles) is worth a visit with its big cliff and pool and can easily be incorporated into a walk along Hadrian’s Wall, which is 0.5 miles from the cottage. If you want to learn about all things Roman, check out the Roman Army Museum (4 miles), next to one of the most complete sections of the wall, the ongoing excavations at Vindolanda (4.5 miles), or Birdoswald (8 miles), another former fort. The North Yorkshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is waiting to be explored, 9 miles south.
