Stretch Fido’s legs with magnificent hikes through the undulating Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty when you stay at this 18th-century stone cottage at Melbury Abbas. Sleeping four guests, the three-bedroom holiday home, which is 3 miles from Shaftesbury, nestles right at the heart of superb dog-walking Dorset countryside. With a tranquil garden, where you can take in the views while Fido explores, and a wood burner to warm chilly paws, this is a holiday home with creature comforts for all seasons.

Take four steps up to open the back door and wander inside via the kitchen/diner. Refill Fido’s water bowl, serve him his dinner, then put the kettle on so everyone else can have a cup of tea with one of the fresh scones you have bought. Follow more steps up to make your way into the lounge, where you can fire up the wood burner and watch TV or play games with your family or friends, while your pal dozes. There is also a snug area, where you can spend a few quiet moments with Fido, and a family bathroom downstairs. Settle your chum downstairs for the night then climb the stairs to enjoy a good night’s sleep in the king-size, twin or single bedroom. Wake up to take in the beautiful views, then head downstairs to let Fido out into the sunshine of the garden. Spend as much time as you can out here too, dining out in the fresh air or enjoying a glass of wine in the summer house on warm evenings.

Venture 7 miles from the cottage to take Fido to the National Trust’s Hambledon Hill, where you can pick up the Stour Valley Way National Trail. Climb to the summit of the Iron Age hillfort to see across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Quite remarkable. I cannot fault this cottage at all beyond the busy road; something that no one can do anything about. Masses of off-road parking, a very long and well stocked garden - even with its own pigsty. The windows are a lovely feature, and the kitchen is so well stocked with everything you could possibly need. We only used the main bedrooRead morem, and then was supremely comfortable, and I managed to only bump my head once in the week we were there. Attractions abound in the area... Hide

We had a fantastic stay in this cozy cottage. Everything you need has been provided. The beds were really comfy. The enclosed garden was perfect for our cocker spaniel who loved finding the fallen apples at the bottom of the garden. The cottage was warm at night. It is in an idea location for lots of lovely walks and the local scenery is stunning. Read moreWould thoroughly recommend a stay. Hide

A lovely cottage. Very comfortable and well equipped. A good sized garden that catches the sun nearly all day. And the little potting shed reading room down the garden was great to use when it was raining. It was difficult to walk anywhere from the cottage due to the busy road and no footpaths, albeit there were some good walks near to the cottage.Read more Hide

A very beautiful place to stay, and an amazing location over looking the rolling hills in the distant. Very uplifting and peaceful.

An excellent cottage, beautifully appointed. All the fittings are of very good quality and we had everything we wanted and more. Lots of nice touches like vintage books about the area. It makes a good centre for visiting Dorset and Wiltshire and is close to some lovely walking.

Lovely character cottage very well equipped to a very high standard. Beautiful quality bedding and towels. The rear garden is beautifully designed and is a sun trap. There are walks from the door but be aware that the road the cottage is located on can be busy at times so be careful with very young children and dogs. Within driving distance of ShafRead moretesbury and other local attractions. Hide
