This charming property, situated on the edge of the North Pennines AONB, is perfect for couples and small families looking for a countryside getaway with their loyal canine companion in tow. Sleeping four over two peaceful bedrooms, it won’t be long before you’re feeling refreshed and ready to unleash it all in the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales. Take a lake cruise on one of the Ullswater Steamers (26 miles) or go for a train ride from Kirkby Stephen East with the Stainmore Railway Company (19.5 miles) where the station cats allow dogs to use their water bowls!
The holiday home, which is less than 100 metres from a dog-friendly pub, is homely and welcoming. Bright colours in the kitchen diner make it the ideal place for a sociable family meal, while cosy neutral decor and an exposed wood beam over the fireplace beckon you to snuggle up on the sofa in front of the wood burner, the pup curled up by your feet. On sunny evenings, head out to the enclosed garden for an al fresco drink among amazing fell views. When it’s time for bed, let the sleeping dog lie in the utility room and head up to sleep in one of the tranquil bedrooms.
Go for walkies in the grounds of Lowther Castle and Gardens (13 miles); there’s lots to see including hidden gardens and an adventure playground that kids will love – the pup will have to wait outside that one! Aira Force (24.5 miles) is a spectacular waterfall that’s well worth a visit, and the National Trust provide water bowls for thirsty dogs. Pups get their very own souvenir ticket at the South Tynedale Railway (23.5 miles) – you can also enjoy a leisurely walk along the South Tyne Trail that runs alongside the fenced-off track.
