Carlisle (13.5 miles) is the county town of Cumbria and has a range of shops within its attractive buildings. It’s also the start of the Cumbrian Way, a 73-mile walking route through Cumbria down to Ulverston. Penrith (18 miles) is also worth a visit which sits just above the stunning Ullswater (24 miles), where you can take a trip on the paddle steamer and see the impressive fells from another perspective. Picturesque Aira Force Waterfall (30 miles) is also a good place for a stroll.
