This wonderful property, built in 1760 to make use of the healing waters of the Beaulieu River, is the perfect little bolthole for two – including the loyal hound, of course! Sleeping you both in a charming double bedroom, it won’t be long before you’re all up and out heading down the footpath that runs alongside the cottage to explore the river and beyond. Spend the day at Calshot Beach (10 miles), wandering the mile-long stretch of shingle, and bring a picnic to enjoy while you’re soaking up the views looking out to sea.
The property, which is situated down a shared driveway through the adjoining boatyard, is cosy and comfortable. The contemporary-styled kitchen has everything you need to cook up a romantic meal, while a wood burner-effect electric fire and comfy seating in the large lounge invites you to snuggle up on chilly evenings. In better weather, let the pup go mutts in the enclosed garden while you sip an al fresco drink; the garden wraps around the cottage and the front has beautiful views of the river. Watch that your canine companion doesn’t try to take a dip in the unenclosed pond that used to be the Duke’s bath!
Walk just 325 metres towards the river and hop aboard a Beaulieu River Cruise (April to November) and see if you can spot any wildlife. If you prefer to ride on land, visit the steam train at Exbury Gardens (6 miles) and stroll the 22 miles of pathways in the garden, before finishing off with some doggy ice cream in the tearoom. The North Solent National Nature Reserve (3 miles) stretches from the coast to the mouth of the Beaulieu River and boats pass by heathland and woodland before getting to the sea.
