Furry ones will love the bracing Atlantic air, and children will adore the Big Sheep (3 miles) with its rides, shows, animals and indoor play zones. Appledore (3 miles) is home to the North Devon Maritime Museum and some excellent pubs and eateries.

Sensational discoveries await human and canine adventurers. Join the Tarka Trail at Bideford (4 miles) or Instow (5 miles), or the scintillating South West Coast Path. Walk the sublime 5 miles from Bucks Mills (9 miles) to quaint Clovelly (12 miles). Run wild with the dogs at Bude (26 miles), Woolacombe and Ilfracombe (23 miles), Croyde (21 miles), Saunton and Braunton Burrows (19 miles) – check for seasonal doggy restrictions. The Hartland Peninsular (17 miles) is magnificent.
