Westward Ho! is best-known for its seafront, the large expanse of clean sand backed by a pebble ridge and grasslands of Northam Burrows Country Park. It’s the perfect setting for family activities including rock pooling, sand castle building and picnics, and dogs are welcome year-round on the northern end of the beach. Follow the South West Coast Path from here to the Taw-Torridge estuary where you can enjoy waggy-tailed walks along the waterfront at pretty Appledore (2.5 miles) and, on the opposite bank of the river, Instow (4.5 miles). Alternatively, sniff out the Tarka Trail – one of the country’s longest traffic-free paths – which you can pick up the historic port town of Bideford, less than 3 miles away.
