This attractive fisherman’s cottage in Appledore, one of North Devon’s finest traditional fishing villages, is a wonderful place to stay with your family and four-legged friend. Situated on one of the narrow, winding streets, there are plenty of dog-friendly footpaths, pubs, cafes and shops on your doorstep. The long, sandy beach and clean surf of Westward Ho! is only 2 miles away and dogs are welcome all year round with restrictions during peak times. Or why not release your inner sea dog and catch the ferry across the estuary to the sand dunes, pubs and shops in Instow?
As you’d expect, this cottage is bursting with character. The whitewashed stone walls and wood burner in the lounge are charming and homely, while the cool greys give it a contemporary feel, and the tiled floor makes cleaning up muddy paw prints easy. The well-equipped, large kitchen/diner is light and airy, and an open staircase leads up to the spacious king-size master bedroom, double bedroom and bunk bed room. Outside, there is a small enclosed courtyard with steps leading up to a patio area where you can soak up the sea air with a BBQ and drinks.
Sandy paws are inevitable with beaches like Westward Ho! (2 miles) and Instow (5 miles) to visit, but for those who want to appreciate the rugged coastline without the sand, take to the South West Coast Path which can be accessed from many places including Westward Ho!. For an easier walk, head to the market town of Bideford (3.5 miles) where you can wander around the many shops and eateries in its narrow streets before stepping onto the Tarka Trail, a former railway, to walk towards Barnstaple or Torrington. You also have a choice of nearby family attractions, including The Big Sheep (4 miles).
