This charming cottage nestles in an historic cobbled street which leads down to Appledore’s pretty quayside. The fishing village sits at the mouth of the River Torridge where you can watch the local fishermen returning with the day’s catch. There is a lively, artistic community here, too, and plenty of good quality dog-friendly pubs and restaurants - many of them serving locally-sourced seafood. You are very close to some wonderful walks for you and your dog to enjoy, including some outstanding beaches.
As soon as you step inside the front door, you will notice the traditional character of this cottage, with its exposed beams and the homely wood burner at its heart. At the same time, there are plenty of modern amenities on offer, such as the TV/DVD so you can keep up with your favourite programmes as you relax on the sofa. The cottage kitchen is well-equipped, featuring a washing machine perfect for washing dog towels after long coastal walks. Comfort and cosiness are abundant in the furnishings and fittings, especially in the restful, welcoming bedrooms. Guests should be aware that there are low ceilings and doorways throughout this traditional property.
Northam Burrows Country Park (1 mile), a wildlife-rich area of sand dunes and salt marshes, is in walking distance. Dogs love it here, with plenty of scents to seek out, though when sheep are grazing, they are best kept on a lead. The beach of Westward Ho! (2 miles) is just the other side of the burrows, beyond a distinctive pebble ridge, where no dog restrictions are placed in the winter, but you are asked to keep to the northern part of the beach during the summer. Chase a ball, splash in the waves, surf, swim, sunbathe or build sandcastles on this glorious stretch of golden sand.
