Our South West Canine Critic, Honey, took a trip further round the Bristol Channel to Westward Ho! where she sniffed out the best dog-friendly beaches and stayed in one of our pawsome cottages. Here’s what she got up to:
Stonelea is in Westward Ho!, North Devon, and welcomes up to six humans and two dogs. The house was modern, welcoming and we had nothing but pawsitive first impressions. As we walked into the big open hallway and explored the downstairs, we found three big bedrooms, a large main bathroom, and a utility room where my humans could store all of their coats, muddy boots and, of course, my travel essentials! There were big comfy beds and televisions in all the rooms and the main and second bedrooms had en-suite bathrooms. Best of all, there was a big back door that led straight out to the beautiful garden. Each bedroom downstairs was individually decorated and finished to the highest quality with the master bedroom and second bedroom having large bi-fold doors that led straight out to the garden.
When we made our way upstairs, we were instantly stunned by the large open-plan kitchen which was well laid out with modern appliances that met our every need. The lounge had large, comfortable sofas, a wide-screen television, and a fluffy rug which quickly became my new bed. On the bookcase there was a great collection of books, DVDs, and a comprehensive welcome book which included detailed instructions of the household and its amenities, an extensive list of local restaurants and takeaways, and information about the local area. And there were huge bi-fold doors that opened right on to a big balcony. Everything was private and enclosed, so I felt completely safe to run around.
The back garden was fully enclosed, had a log burning hot tub, a large dining table, comfy seating, and was well stocked with firewood. There was also a pawsome beach hut which held a dryer, a BBQ, bodyboards, games, cushions, an umbrella, and spare doggy bags.
The most impawressive thing about the property had to be the garden. It was beautifully landscaped with a manicured lawn and plenty of pretty flowers for me to sniff. There was also a nice patio for me to lie on which was the pawfect sunbathing spot for me! My humans enjoyed the large dining table and having a BBQ in the sun, which I was more than happy to help polish off. There was so many great spots for me to lie while my humans spent endless hours in the hot tub!
The other thing that bow-wowed us about the property was how luxurious everything was. My humans said the beds were some of the comfiest said they have slept in, the furniture was all high quality and well placed, and we loved how the high ceilings and bi-fold doors made the rooms feel so light and open. My favourite spot was right in front of the balcony doors in the lounge – it was so warm and sunny!
The USP of the property was its all-round luxury. Every corner of the house was beautifully finished with impawressive attention to detail. All the features and appliances were contemporary and of the highest pawsible quality. The garden was the best garden we have ever had in a holiday home and made our time there really special. From the hot tub and the BBQ to how green and safely enclosed the space was, we couldn’t have asked for more.
As well as my pawrents feeling welcome, the owners made a super special effort to make me feel welcome too. When we arrived, there was a big hamper waiting for my humans with lots of delicious treats, including local cookies, chocolate, and crisps, prosecco and cider, and treats for me! To make me feel at home, there were water bowls inside and outside, and spare leads and doggy bags! There was also information for my humans about good dog walks and dog-friendly places they could take me. What was really nice was that the welcome message left for us included me!
The local area
There was a great selection of pubs and restaurants where my pawrents could take me, a supermarket just a short walk away, and lots of new places for me to explore.
Our absolute favourite thing about the local area was the abundance of beaches. Two particular favourites were Croyde Beach and Saunton Sands, because of the amazing sand dunes and miles of shoreline to chase along. We had a pawticularly unforgettable evening at Croyde beach watching the sunset and playing in the dunes.
On one of the days, we travelled to Kynance Cove in Cornwall and had a wonderful walk down to the beach. The white sand and blue sea felt amazing on my paws and we saw some of the most impawressive views me and my pawrents have ever seen!
Other dogs would be barking mad not to love this property! There was so much room to run around and so many great spots for much-needed napping. The safe, fenced-in garden has a lovely lawn which is so much fun to roll around on and the big bi-fold doors mean the rooms were extra sunny which make them pawfect for sunbathing. I was made to feel super welcome and could tell the owners had thought about my wellbeing. There were loads of great walks nearby and plenty of dog-friendly pubs.
My pawrents’ favourite thing was the hot tub – they spent so long in there, I fell asleep waiting for them! They also loved how comfortable the sofas and beds were and how the property had everything they needed. They were very impawressed with the cleanliness and design of the kitchen and all its mod-cons!
I give this property a solid five-paw rating. It had everything me and my humans could ask for and exceeded our expectations in every way. We had the best week and wished our holiday could last furever.
