Llan Cottage review by Hugo and Hershey, the Siblings Canine Critics 2021

Hugo and Hershey 16 May 2022

These two brothers in arms are as inseparable as relatives get. Please welcome to the pack Hugo and Hershey, who were the winners of our Siblings category at the 2021 Canine Critics’ Awards.

These two miniature dachshund brothers decided to take their mum and dad to Llan Ffestiniog in North Wales on holiday to sample Welsh food and Welsh beaches, and test out their little legs on some of the best walks in the region.

As you can see from their Instagram account @hugoandhershey, the only thing these boys like more than being outside is being together. Read on to find out about their Welsh escapades.

Canine Critics' review of Llan Cottage

Hugo (right) and Hershey by a lake

Hello everyone, Hugo and Hershey here!

We have just returned from our week-long stay in Llan Ffestiniog and would love to tell you all about it. This quaint little village lies in the north of Wales, sandwiched between the wonders of Snowdonia and the stunning Welsh coast. Perfect for days spent exploring lush woodlands, hidden trails, towering peaks and long sandy beaches.

The cottage

The front of Llan Cottage, along with the living room and hot tub

Our base was the aptly named Llan Cottage. This charming little place brims with character and we felt at home as soon as we arrived. While the house is on the main road, it was still very quiet and peaceful. The long back garden was secure and even contained a large outdoor bathtub with bubbles and lights. Our humans spent hours in this hot tub and said the views were amazing, but we only have tiny legs so we will have to take their word for it.

The bedroom of Llan Cottage

We slept so well after our adventure-packed days and our humans said that the king-size bed was so comfortable!

The area

The brothers find some sheep out on a walk

We love walkies and we spent lots of time exploring straight from the cottage. Within moments, we were wandering through a local nature reserve, staring in awe at cascading waterfalls and stopping off at a lakeside café to rest our little legs. We saw so many big white curly dogs – but they didn’t bark like us; they made this strange baa-baa noise. Mum and dad said they were called sheep, and apparently, they outnumber humans in Wales!

The wind in their fur on a hill-top walk

We needed all of our energy for the walk up Snowdon. I think we underestimated this one a little bit, so we got our humans to carry us for the hardest parts (in future, we would choose the Llanberis Path over the Miners’ Track). Mum and dad were extra tired after this one, spending longer than normal in the outdoor bath.

Dog-friendly Snowdonia

Ice cream, scones and beer make for a good holiday

As we expected, Snowdonia is super dog friendly. Whenever mum and dad stopped off somewhere for a coffee, we were always welcomed in by people who made a fuss of us. Mum and dad shared their cream scones and jam with us – yummy!

The brothers visiting the beach and harbour towns

We spent a lot of time on the coast where you can find Porthmadog, Harlech and Criccieth – some of our favourite little towns. We also went to the beach, which was the perfect place to play with the ball! Further inland is the historic village of Betws-y-Coed, filled with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants – not to mention a steam train that you can take a ride on.

Paw rating 5/5!

Getting cosy in Llan Cottage

If you love long walks through the countryside and on the beach, this idyllic cottage is the perfect place for you. Relax after a long day in the hot tub and soak in the most amazing views of the mountains. We absolutely loved our stay in Llan Cottage and we were so sorry to have to leave; we would highly recommend it!
