When we asked our 2019 team of Canine Critics to vote for their favourite entrant, they chose a beautiful terrier cross from Yorkshire. This little dog has a big personality and was the perfect pup to win the coveted accolade of Critics’ Choice, and become one of our Canine Critics for 2020.
Ronnie, otherwise known as @ronniethewanderdog, is a rescue pup who will steal your heart. While everyone’s been stuck at home during lockdown, Ronnie and his best friend Niki have done a great job keeping themselves occupied and staying up to date with the dog-loving community over on social media.
We wanted to get to know Ronnie a little better so have interviewed this intriguing fellow to find out his go-to location for walkies, his favourite room in the house and, when he is able to travel, exactly what he looks for in a dog-friendly cottage…
What's your favourite thing about where you live?
I can go on walks from my doorstep into the beautiful Yorkshire countryside without having to get into the car. I’m not a big fan of the car! There is also a pub and cafe in our village I am allowed to go into, which is great as I always seem to get lots of treats.
What’s your favourite photo you’ve taken in your local area?
Ronnie in the bluebells in Pretty Wood, a short walk from his house.
What’s your go-to local location for walkies?
We are lucky enough to live a stone’s throw from Castle Howard. Dogs are allowed in the grounds and it is a beautiful place to explore. I especially like watching all the geese and swans on the lake.
What’s your favourite outdoor exercise?
Running through long grass! I miss summer when the fields were full with long grass which I could run and jump through. I loved it and my family always used to laugh at me when I did this!
What's your favourite indoor exercise?
Playing with my toy balls. I love to throw them around in the living room and watch them roll under the sofa. I don’t know why my mum gets so annoyed when she has to keep getting them back out for me.
What's your favourite thing about ‘staying at home’?
I don’t like being on my own for too long so I love that my mum and dad work from home. I like the company. I also like getting involved in my dad's work meetings when he talks to people on the computer-thingy. I think he appreciates my help.
What are your three top tips on keeping entertained while indoors?
My favourite thing is sniffing! So I love it when my mum hides treats around the house for me to search for. It doesn’t take me long with my super sniffer nose. We also do some training sessions where she teaches me something new – I’m just in it for the treats! She also gives me different things to chew on while she is busy. I love the ones that are the most smelly and make the most mess, of course!
What new tips or tricks have you learnt during lockdown(s) over the past year?
I have learnt to “sit pretty”. I have to sit down and throw both my paws up in the air! My mum calls it “meerkat” because I look like one when I do it. I have also learnt how amazing it is to lay in front of the fire in the evening and have a snooze.
What’s your favourite trick?
I like doing the “sad” trick. I lay down and rest my chin on the floor in between my front paws. Everyone always goes “awww!” and I get lots of treats!
What’s your favourite room in your house, and why?
I love my living room. It’s where I chill out with my mum and dad and we have the BEST fire which I can lay in front of and get all cosy.
Who rules the roost at home?
Probably my dog-dad. Definitely not my dog-mum, I have her wrapped around my little paw!
What’s your favourite photo of you at home?
What do you first look for when booking a dog-friendly cottage?
A great location with exciting walks nearby and a beautiful view is always a big perk! Somewhere with character or quirky features is a hit with us. And again, somewhere with a fire or log burner so we can get all cosy on an evening after a long walk.
Are there any must-haves from a property?
Definitely an enclosed garden for me to run around in where I can’t escape.
Where in the UK would you and your hoomans most love to visit in the next year, and why?
My mum and dad are desperate to take me to a place called “The Lake District”. They say they want to take me up some of the peaks, which sounds exciting to me if I get to climb things! They also want to take me to Cornwall so I can explore all the amazing beaches.
